Ever since this movie came out, I have heard from several different people that it was “a movie made for you”. I’ve owned it since it was released to video and just now got around to watching it. Was it worth they wait? Were they right? Probably.

Even as the movie began, I knew where it was taking me… for the most part, and couldn’t wait to go along for the ride. Cabin In The Woods is not your average horror movies. Much like Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, it takes existing horror movie tropes and puts them on their ear.

Five college friends are looking forward to spending a weekend away from school in a remote cabin in the mountains. From the second they approach their destination, things begin to turn … strange. They are greeted at a gas station by a strange man warning them not to go into the mountains, who the quickly dismiss as just some crazy old guy in the mountains. The five teens find things in the cabin itself are more strange than the old man the met earlier. It doesn’t take long for things to go from strange to bad, and from bad to end of the world, worst case scenario horrible.

I know that this is kinda the set up for just about every movie out there, but I can’t elaborate. Cabin in the woods is, as I said before, not your usual horror movie. It’s sort of like Fight Club, in respect to spoilers. If I were to describe really anything else about the movie, it would ruin the story entirely. Trust me though, it’s well worth seeing. Much like Tucker and Dale, Hatchet, Dead Heads and Devil’s Rock, it’s worth you seeing for yourself to enjoy it.

I loved just about everything in Cabin In The Woods. Even the poster is great. It alludes to the fact that something is not right with the titular cabin, but doesn’t give everything away in one picture. I like the way the movie is directed, written and produced. JJ Abrams having a hand in this movie probably didn’t hurt that at all. However one thing that I did NOT like was the ending. I won’t spoil it, but in my opinion, it ended a little too neatly. There should have been a bit more room for interpretation. Not that I want a sequel, but it should have been more vague. Even after saying that, I can’t recommend this movie enough. It’s on Netflix and is probably pretty cheap to purchase. It’s smartly done, and should really be seen.
