Not really sure where I saw the box or poster for this one first, but it always kinda interested me. I found it dirt cheap on BluRay and decided to take a chance with it, and I’m pretty glad I did.
The first thing you should know about Dead Snow is that it is subtitled. That doesn’t bother me in the least, since I am used to watching old Japanese Anime, and Hong Kong Kung Fu movies. However, to some people it’s an automatic deal breaker. So I figured it should be known up front. Dead Snow is about seven (well eight really) German med school students that decide to spend Easter break in the mountains. They set off to a remote cabin for some fun, booze, and a bit of fooling around. Unfortunately when they get there they are met by some rather pissed off zombies. Not just any zombie though, Nazi Zombies from World War II. See apparently there was a town that was tortured by a group of Nazis for years, until they revolted and drove them into the mountains to die. When the Nazis were forced out, they took all that they could from the people including jewels and money. They were believed dead, but stories circulating say quite the contrary.
As Dead Snow really gets rolling, the kids begin to fight off the zombies with what ever they can find. There is a rather funny bit where they do an homage to Sam Raimi’s style of getting ready before a fight. The kids fight and fight till the bitter end. Every bit of it is great, really. Nothing that you haven’t seen before, but just well done. There were several times during the film that I knew what was going to happen next and couldn’t believe that it actually was carried out the way it was. One particular scene, let’s just say… took a lot of guts. Oddly enough the part that grossed me out the most was the sex scene… in an out house… post deuce.
This was one movie that actually got it right. Apart from the usual scene blocking and expected “surprises” there were several scenes that actually were very well done. Also it’s is a rare instance where the poster for the film actually DOESN’T give away anything critical about the movie. Well played.
If you can stand to watch a film subtitled, it is definitely worth a watch. All over the place people were throwing this film into their “Top 5 Zombie Movies” lists. I’m not sure if it is in the top 5, but it is definitely in the top 10-15 for me.
